woman_bicep_curls_smallWe know that stress can have harmful effects on healthy diet plans because of what it does to the metabolism.

Exercise is a way to keep stress levels low and prevent extra fat storage by also keeping cortisol levels low.

An effective goal would be at least 3 workouts a week.  These should be 30 to 60 minutes long and include strength training.

Following healthy diet plans and this healthy exercise plan will keep stress and fat under control.

memory-loss-smFollowing a strict diet and eating healthy meals is not enough to ensure weight loss.

Stress also needs to be controlled.

When stress levels are high, cortisol levels in the body are also high.

This creates an unstable metabolic system and unwanted results occur.  More fat is stored in cells and extra fat tends to accumulate in the belly.

Keep your stress to a minimum and keep eating your healthy meals.

Want to burn more fat or lose more weight?  Your healthy weight loss diet should consist of this very common food for a few reasons.

This common food is called milk and the casein protein you consume from milk.

Milk helps you to lose weight in a few ways.  The first way is by reducing hunger.  Researchers from the Netherlands put male and female subjects on a high protein diet with casein as the sole source of protein and other subjects on a low protein diet.

The high protein diet subjects had reduced hunger compared to the low protein diet subjects and they also increased the number of calories burned while sleeping.

Why did they burn more calories while sleeping?

Well, the second reason milk is beneficial for healthy weight loss or your diet plans is because it contains natural CLA.  CLA is a natural fat that some research has shown to burn fat calories and help with quick weight loss.

CLA or conjugated linoleic acid is most commonly found in milk or milk products and is its natural form, which at this time appears to be the most effective in regards to other forms of CLA.

Try consuming 1 cup of cottage cheese immediately before bed to take advantage of satisfying hunger and potentially burning more fat calories when following your healthy weight loss diet.

obese-child_smIn Medway Massachusetts the public school system is insisting the students are weighed and that their body mass index be calculated so that the school can determine if the child is obese or not.

They are early adopters of this trend and it may be coming to your school district soon.

The results are sent home with the student just like a report card would except it is a report card on the child’s fitness level.

Some parents are already fighting this claiming that the public school system and the state government has overstepped their boundaries and is showing no respect for the parents and pediatrician.

The potential risk with this is that the child will feel embarrassed or judged.  Will they wonder if they are being watched every time they eat lunch, which can easily lead to an eating disorder after that.

The school system is probably thinking that someone has to take charge, but when are they going to actually teach the child how to eat, exercise and live a healthier life?

Is it going to be during that 1 hour period where they cut out gym class from most schools or is it going to be during math class when they teach them how to figure out their BMI?

Should the school system be allowed to require bodyweight measurements and have a fitness report card sent home to the parents or should they butt out and mind their own business?

There are many healthy weight loss diets that state you have to be strict with your diet plans all the time.  Cheating is for fad diets and can make you fat, apparently.

Well, there is some science that shows this may not be the case depending on which type of healthy weight loss diet you are following.

When you diet, whether it is a fad diet plan or a healthy weight loss diet, your body is usually being restricted in some shape or form.  Obviously you can’t eat more than what you burn to lose weight so there will always be some type of restriction, whether it be calories or a specific nutrient.

The body can start to think that you are starving it when this happens and slow your metabolism to conserve energy.  It does this when it senses your hormone leptin level drop.

The good thing is that you can easily reset your leptin levels by "cheating" on your diet.  If you are following a fad diet or other diet plan that requires restriction of some type you might want to implement a "cheat" day once every 5-7 days to reset your leptin levels and keep your body from triggering its starvation response.

Just make sure that this 1 cheat day a week doesn’t turn into 2 or 3 cheat days.

The best form of cardio may just require you to lift weights.  University of Wisconsin researchers found that if you perform kettlebell snatches for 1 minute you can burn 20 calories in that minute.

When compared to other forms of cardio you will see that some just don’t compare.

A 180 pound man burns this many calories in 1 minute:

    Spinning:  14.3 calories per minute
Rowing (vigorously):  11.5 calories per minute
    Elliptical:  9.8 calories per minute
Running (7 minute mile pace):  19 calories per minutes
    Swimming:  13.6 calories per minute

As you can see, running at a 7 minute mile pace is the closest to burning the same amount of calories, but if you can’t run at that pace or don’t want to spend an hour on the cardio machines then pick up a kettlebell and do 10-15 one minute sets to burn hundreds of calories in a short amount of time.

green_tea_lgA recently released human study shows that a low dose of epigallocatechin (EGCG) from green tea was found to increase fat oxidation by 33%.  This was published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The World Healthy Organization estimates that by 2015, there will be more than 1.5 billion overweight consumers and that they will spend more than $117 billion per year in the US alone.

There have been 3 proposed mechanisms regarding EGCG in which it was believed EGCG could increase energy metabolism and fatty acid oxidation, inhibit fat cell development, and/or reduce fat absorption and increase fat excretion.  This all means healthy weight loss for you.

Weight loss tips:  It was also reported that caffeine must be present for EGCG to help with weight loss and that there needs to be a stimulation of your nervous system.

This new study was performed in collaboration with scientists from University Medicine Berlin supports the relationship between caffeine and EGCG and they also found that the compounds produce similar effects.  A daily dose of 300 mg of EGCG delivered  a 33 per cent increase in fat oxidation, while a daily dose of 200 mg caffeine delivered a 34.5 per cent increase. The researchers stated when male subjects were given a combination of EGCG (300 mg) and caffeine (200 mg), fat oxidation increased by almost 50 per cent.

Dr Josh Lambert, assistant professor in the Department of Food Science at Penn State told NutraIngredients.com that laboratory studies and small-scale human intervention studies “indicate that consumption of tea might promote weight loss, help maintain body weight following weight loss, and prevent the development of some diseases associated with obesity such as diabetes and fatty liver disease”.  “The effective doses seem to be 3 to 10 cups of green tea per day,” he added.

If you are already eating clean and exercising with intensity adding this combination of ingredients is believed to help you accelerate your healthy weight loss.

California has become the first state to ban the use of trans fat cooking oils.  This law went into effect on January 1st.

Of course there are exceptions and those manufacturers who make baked or deep fried items have until 2011 to switch.

Now I understand what they are trying to do because evidence continues to grow showing that trans fats clog arteries and can cause heart disease, but most of the products we eat that contain trans fats are baked or deep fried so why pass the law now yet allow food manufacturers that make the trans fat foods we eat the most wait until 2011.

I also wonder how much of an impact this will really have on the health care issues that California faces.  Are trans fats really the worst thing that is causing the obesity problem in California?

I know I can name a handful of other things that are contributing quite significantly to the obesity problem.

What do you think?

Will banning trans fat cooking oils and products made with trans fats solve the problem?
